What Size Storage Unit Do I Actually Need?

What Size Storage Unit Do I Actually Need?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What size storage unit do I need?"

The honest answer is that it's harder to estimate than most people think.

After helping hundreds of residential and business customers choose storage units, we've noticed one trend over and over again: most people underestimate how much space they actually need. It's easy to picture your furniture and boxes in your mind, but much harder to visualize how they'll fit inside a storage unit.

The good news is that with a little planning, you can choose a unit that gives you enough space without paying for more than you need.

Why Most People Choose a Unit That's Too Small

The biggest mistake we see isn't customers renting a unit that's too large—it's renting one that's too small.

Many customers are confident they know exactly what size they need. Then moving day arrives, and they discover everything doesn't fit quite the way they expected.

In fact, we've seen this happen so often that many customers end up renting a second storage unit rather than moving everything into one larger unit. That's how difficult it can be to estimate storage space.

When you're deciding between two sizes, it's worth thinking about whether the slightly larger unit might save you time, frustration, and even money in the long run.

It's Not Just About Fitting Everything

One thing many online storage guides leave out is how you plan to use your storage unit.

Ask yourself:

  • Will everything stay in storage until moving day?
  • Or will you need to retrieve holiday decorations, business inventory, seasonal clothing, or other items throughout the year?

If you'll be visiting your unit regularly, don't plan on packing every inch from floor to ceiling.

Instead:

  • Leave yourself a walkway through the middle if possible.
  • Store frequently used items near the front.
  • Keep seasonal items grouped together for easy access.

Having a little extra space can make a huge difference when you need to grab one box without unloading half the unit.

Use the Unit Diagrams

One of the easiest ways to visualize your storage unit is by looking at the size diagrams provided during the reservation process.

These diagrams help you compare the unit to the furniture and belongings you're storing and often provide a much better sense of scale than measurements alone.

They're a simple tool, but they can help you make a much more confident decision before booking.

Packing Smarter Saves Space

How you pack your storage unit can be just as important as the size you choose.

Here are a few tips we've learned from years of helping customers store their belongings.

Group Similar Items Together

Store like items together whenever possible.

For example:

  • Christmas decorations
  • Camping equipment
  • Kitchen supplies
  • Office files
  • Children's toys

Taking a little extra time to organize while you're moving in will save you hours when you're looking for something later.

Break Down Large Furniture

If furniture can be disassembled, do it.

Removing table legs, taking apart bed frames, and separating sectional furniture can save a surprising amount of space and make stacking much easier.

Label Every Box

Even if you're convinced you'll remember what's inside each box, you probably won't six months from now.

We recommend labeling every box clearly.

Even better, create a simple list of the contents and tape it to the outside of the box. That extra minute now can save you from opening five different boxes just to find one item later.

My Advice: Don't Be Afraid to Size Up

If I were renting a storage unit myself, I'd usually choose the slightly larger size.

The extra room makes it much easier to organize your belongings, access items when you need them, and avoid the frustration of trying to fit everything into a space that's just a little too small.

The nice thing is that storage needs change.

As you donate items, sell furniture, or move belongings out, you may eventually find that a smaller unit works just fine. If a smaller unit is available, you can always move down later.

Starting with enough space often makes the entire storage experience much easier.

Reserve With Confidence

Choosing the right storage unit doesn't have to be stressful.

Think beyond simply fitting everything inside. Consider how you'll access your belongings, take time to pack efficiently, and don't underestimate how much room your items will actually need.

If you're still unsure, we're always happy to help you choose the best size for your situation.

Our goal is to help you reserve with confidence, knowing that if your storage needs change, we'll do our best to help you move into a unit that's a better fit.
